Steal My Work

Tue Apr 15, 2008, 3:29 PM
I open with something a great man once told me.
"Don't forget why you began doing this in the first place. You did it because you enjoyed it. Don't ever forget that. Once you do and start worrying about popularity and all that, it is no longer worth doing."
Words my father once told me about working in the theatre only a short year ago. Yet I see today that his own works are being covered in large red NO! marks. I understand why he did this, and I would not admonish him for doing so.
I say this as a lesson to anyone willing to read this. Your work, will never be yours. We live in an age where private lives are only to those with no technology. Computers allow us to search new avenues, relax with people across the world, and create art in its many forms. Yet we also live where dishonesty is simply a click away. From the man cheating on his wife with a "cyber-lover" to the creatively blocked, who uses an essay printed from some random website.
I take credit for my work, and mine alone. As I share credit to whom it belongs. I would not need to quote "thou shalt not steal" to get my point across, yet we do so every day, every one of us, in some form or another. Our art is a piece of us, our heart, and our joy. I may not be able to post as much as some, but I assure you, I would never steal someone elses work willfully.
Be proud of your art, and all the work you put into it. Let the thieves do what they will, for they cannot feel the same pride and appreciation for ones work as you can.
